- Font
Problems
~Type
1 fonts need both screen and printer fonts
~Screen font only for Truetype
~Supply fonts for imported illustrations
- Document
Settings Incorrect
~Setup document size to match final trim size
~DO NOT do a layout on an oversize page
- Bleeds
Inadequate
~Create final page to trim size
~Elements that go to edge must continue past by .125"
- Colors
Incorrectly Specified
~Be sure to set spot colors as spot and process colors to separate
as process.
~Do not duplicate colors - ie- Pantone 485CV and Pantone 485CVU
~Setup Illustrator files with the same color name as in layout
program
-
Layouts
~Adjust panels of brochures to allow for folding
~Be sure to layout all diecut pieces as they would appear flat.
~Call Westland for assistance or for die templates

- Saddlestitch-Pushout/Perfect
Binding
~A large number of pages saddlstitched, causes the pages to push
out. The closer to the center, the greater the pushout. Do not
put elements close to the outside edge.
~A perfect bound book requires bleed on all four sides. When laying
out your document, pages must be offset so bleed can be added
in the gutter.
~Call Westland for assistance in either of the above
- No
Laser Proof or Dummy
~Up to date laser proofs and a dummy should be supplied with your
job.
- Trapping
~Westland will assume responsibility for trapping your files.
Please indicate any special instructions.
- Aligning
Elements Visually Instead of by the Numbers
~Position elements by the numbers in your measurements palette.
DO NOT TRUST THE SCREEN!
- Graphics
not Linked
~Do not embed graphics inside Pagemaker documents, link them and
send graphics as support files.

- Images
Saved in Wrong Format
~Save images in CMYK mode, Not RGB, and no compression
- Graphics/EPS
Files Missing
~Graphics and EPS files must be supplied for us to proceed .
- Resolution
~Rule of Thumb: Resolution should be 1.5 - 2.0 times the LPI at
the actual size used.
- Blends
~Quark, Illustrator and Freehand blends do not separate well and
will band. A full range blend - 0% to 100% will separate better
than a 0% to 20%.
~Best results are achieved when blends are made in Photoshop and
noise is added.
- Four
Color Black
~Use for large solids only, not for small text. ~Westlands four
color black is 35cyan, 30 magenta, 30 yellow and 100 black.

- Reverse
Type
~Avoid using small type or serifed type to reverse out of black
or any other dark PMS color. Especially a problem on uncoated
stocks.
- Screens
in Solid Backgrounds
~High percentage screen tints, 60% and up, running in a solid
background will fill in.
~Two remedies for this are to reduce the screen tint or run it
on a separate plate as an undercolor.
- Illustrations
~Name colors to match layout program
~Size of elements will change as file is reduced - watch line
weights.
~Convert type to outlines to avoid font problems.
- Metallic
Inks
~Metallic inks are opaque and require special treatment when preparing
film.
