Westland Printers' Environmental Philosophy

FACT - During 2009 Westland Printers recycled 914.11 tons of paper - RESULTING IN

5,266 trees preserved for the future
15,205 lbs waterborne waste not created
24,747 lbs solid waste not generated
487,276 lbs net greenhouse gases prevented
2,236,410 gallons wastewater flow saved
3,729,707 BTUs energy not consumed

We have partnered with best in class companies [Clean Currents, Enernoc, FSC®, etc.], joined elite organizations [Maryland Green Registry] and significantly streamlined our production methods to reduce our environmental impact. This is all in addition to the traditional recycling of paper waste, cardboard and aluminum plates within the plant.

In pre-press, direct-to-plate has eliminated film processing and its inherent silver waste disposal issues. Additionally, we have invested in a color management system that will improve our efficiencies through the shop thereby reducing our waste and energy consumption.

In the pressroom, we have been using soy-based inks exclusively for the past 6 years, but it was the investment in new technology that made a major improvement in our footprint: Wash-up solvent reduced by 65%, fountain solution reduced by 50%, paper make ready reduced by 25% and ink waste dramatically reduced with a major capital expenditure of new iron.

Paper is still a great medium to communicate your message to your clients and we are fortunate that paper is a renewable resource. The right choice of paper is a major determinant of your overall environmental impact. We can inform and recommend newly affordable and innovative recycled papers and/or print-on-demand solutions. Ask for our spreadsheet of "friendly" papers, or discuss your particular needs with your Account Executive.

Westland has been an FSC certified printer since 2007. The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable way. To use the FSC logo as an environmental claim on paper, the product must have flowed through the FSC chain-of-custody from the FSC-certified forest, to a paper manufacturer, merchant and finally to a printer who all have FSC chain-of-custody certification.

We are committed to doing all we can to reduce our environmental impact and will continue to improve processes internally, as well as to promoting the very best earth-friendly products and services.

Reuse, recycle, reinvent...it is our collective responsibility.
